Many women turn to cosmetic surgery procedures like breast augmentation and breast reduction to enhance their appearance, physical comfort, and self-esteem. When it comes to the labia, one of a woman’s most personal areas, cosmetic surgery can accomplish these goals as well. Labiaplasty can both enhance the appearance of the labia and increase comfort while participating in a wide variety of activities.
Dr. Timothy Jones is skilled and experienced at performing labiaplasty in St. Louis. Click here to request your consultation at Genesis Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Center.
The labiaplasty procedure, also called vaginal lip reduction, enhances the appearance of inner and outer labia (labia minora and labia majora) that are naturally enlarged, elongated, or excessive, or have become that way over time. It may also be used to repair the labia following disease, injury, or childbirth or to reduce excess skin around the clitoris to improve appearance and sensation.
Women who request labiaplasty generally fall into two categories.
Problem: Typical candidates in their 20s or 30s feel self-conscious about the appearance of their labia during sexual activity or when wearing clothing such as swimsuits, yoga pants, or tight jeans. In addition, excessive or disproportionate labia can lead to chafing and discomfort during sports, sexual intercourse, or everyday activities.
Solution: Dr. Jones has found that labiaplasty can produce desired improvements for some of these women, though excess tissue must often be surgically removed. Incisions are placed inconspicuously where resulting scars will not be noticeable.
Problem: Older women who have lost a significant amount of weight or are post-menopausal request labiaplasty to rejuvenate their labia majora, which have lost volume, resulting in outer labia that hang or droop. In addition to the undesirable appearance, excessive labia majora can cause significant discomfort.
Solution: For these patients, Dr. Jones uses a combination of labiaplasty and fat-grafting. The excess labia tissue is removed, and fat from somewhere on your body is used to restore lost volume. In the first part of the procedure, fat is extracted from an available area, often the lower abdomen, and then implanted into the outer labia folds. The result is firmer support surrounding the inner folds, resulting in more youthful-looking labia. In some cases, Dr. Jones may recommend a tummy tuck, which has an added benefit of significantly lifting and rejuvenating the labia majora.
Vaginal rejuvenation, also called vaginal tightening, repairs damage often caused by childbirth to restore and enhance vaginal sensation. The surgery repairs the vagina and its supporting muscles, the pelvic floor, and the perineum. Benefits of this procedure can include increased sexual satisfaction and self-confidence, as well as relief from physical complications like childbirth-related incontinence. Dr. Jones works closely with his OB/GYN colleagues to help women achieve the results they want.
Labiaplasty and vaginal rejuvenation can easily be completed in one surgery. Dr. Jones works closely with his OB/GYN colleagues to perform this combined procedure and provide his patients with excellent results. Many women appreciate having a single exposure to anesthesia and a single recovery period.
While it is natural to feel self-conscious about finding a solution to these very personal concerns, the majority of Dr. Jones’s patients are relieved and delighted to have chosen labiaplasty.
